[Review] Delta Goodrem – Dancing With A Broken Heart

Delta Goodrem Dancing With A Broken Heart
Australian pop singer/songwriter, cancer survivor and coach on the Aussie version of The Voice Delta Goodrem has unveiled the artwork for her forthcoming new single, “Dancing With A Broken Heart,” the second taken from upcoming fourth album, Child of the Universe.  “Dancing With A Broken Heart” is the follow up to April’s fun and fancy free Top Five single “Sitting on Top of the World,” an incredibly infectious pop ditty from Grammy-winning producer John Shanks (Celine Dion, Michelle Branch).  While I don’t HATE the new single (also produced by Shanks), it does sort of straddle that generic dance pop line, doesn’t it?

Now don’t get me wrong, we all know how much I love me some generic dance pop but this wasn’t what I was expecting Delta’s follow up single to sound like.  I surely thought that, given the effortless pop production present on her first single, that we’d be hearing another ace-in-the-hole schmaltzy power ballad from Goodrem.  While I’ve been clamoring for Delta to release something more up-tempo and dancefloor ready ever since 2007’s “Believe Again” graced the ARIA charts but this new effort just sounds recycled and slightly forced.
Perhaps “Dancing With A Broken Heart” will grow on me with more listens, but first impression, it don’t impress me much.  I’m inclined to agree with The Prophet on this one, that John Shanks and Delta should stick to what they know best: mid-tempo pop/rock schmaltzpop, “Sitting On Top Of The World” being of course being a prime example. While we wait for Delta’s new album, I’m hoping, praying, clutching at my rainbow rosary for some KILLERDancing With A Broken Heart” remixes.
