British Soul-Pop Singer John Newman Returns with Big New Tune, ‘Come And Get It’ Out July 17th

John Newman is back with a new single, 'Come and Get It,' out July 17th on Island Records

With the release of “Come And Get It,” English singer/songwriter John Newman in 3 for 3 in the “SOLID GOLD HIT” department for me. In other words, this is the 3rd consecutive year that the, now 24 year old has put out a SMASHER of a song that I’ve become obsessed over. Job well done, sir. First it was his breakout hit “Love Me Again” (2013), followed in 2014 by “Cheating” (a song, which in THIS humble blogger’s opinion was vastly superior to the aforementioned “breakout”) and now in 2015 with “Come And Get It.” Written and co-produced by international hitmaker (and 1/2 of The Bird and The Bee) Greg Kurstin, this song is easily Newman’s biggest single to date. Be sure and check out the just released video below.

Come And Get It” starts out with just a sweet, yet slightly urgent-sounding melodic whistle, before its MASSIVE, toe-tapper of a bassline comes in, taking it from 0 to 60 in a matter of seconds. This one goes from “ditty” to “CHOOOOOON” in a very short amount of time, and I have a feeling, when it’s finally released on July 17th (Island), it’s going to be another hit for John Newman, or at least it bloody well should be.

While “Come And Get It” doesn’t stray too far off, musically and stylistically from Tribute, Newman’s 2013 debut, the song is like a jacked up version of earlier hits like “Love Me Again.” The throwback soul and Motown vibes are still very much present here, very noticeable in the song’s infectious chorus, and horn flourishes heard throughout the song. While, YES we heard some of these same sounds on his debut; they sound bigger and better to me now. In an interview last Friday talking on Capital Breakfast about the new album and single, Newman hinted that his new record will include “better grooves, better basslines and better hooks,” and he was right. Newman went on to describe album #2 as “a record that felt good to me in the sun, in the car driving,” etc. etc. I say YES. YES YES YES to all of that.

New John Newman single, 'Come and Get It' drops July 17th.

Shot in Los Angeles, the nostalgia-drenched (mostly) black and white clip features Newman playing the role of “the other man” in a love triangle between a gorgeous Elizabeth Montgomery look-a-like (*hint* she played Samantha in the 1960s TV series ‘Bewitched’) and her deadbeat slob of a boyfriend.

Come And Get It” will appear on John Newman‘s, as-yet-untitled sophomore album, which he recorded in Los Angeles and Miami over the last eight months. The single is available for Pre-Order now (iTunes UK) and will be available to download July 17th via Island Records. Last time we heard from John was on the Calvin Harris collaboration, “Blame” which earned him his third UK No. 1 single as well as his first U.S. Top 20 single when the song peaked at No. 19 on the Billbord Hot 100. Prior to “Blame,” Newman struck gold with his Rudimental SMASH collab, “Feel The Love,” earning him his first No. 1 single, before going on to prove he could do it on his own with “Love Me Again” reaching the top spot on the UK Singles chart.

UK fans itching to see John Newman perform live are in luck, as he’s set to take the stage June 7th as one of the headliners at the No Tomorrow Festival in Nottingham, and June 27th in London at the BTS (British Summer Time) Hyde Park where he’ll appear on the same bill as Taylor Swift and Ellie Goulding. Having had the pleasure of seeing John Newman live in New York City, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he makes it back across the pond to play some shows. John Newman is truly a CAN’T MISS live performer.
