Enter to win Sirens from Gorgon City!
It’s about DAMN time America started REALLY paying attention to the UK—UK pop and electronic music in particular. I feel like British soul has sort of been big here in the states since…well forever, but Amy Winehouse certainly brought about the latest BOOM…a BOOM that hasn’t really slowed down since. No complaints here!
Since the arrival of English electronic duo Disclosure back in June of 2013, America has seen a steady stream of UK dance acts primed to take nightclubs on this side of the pond by STORM. With songs by Clean Bandit (feat. Jess Glynne) and Disclosure (8 months after it’s release “Latch” is STILL in the Top 40!) hovering around the Top 40 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart (and more creepin’ their way up!) it’s safe to say that UK dance music has gone mainstream. The latest dance act to take a crack at the American market—Gorgon City AKA two very attractive (SEE EVIDENCE ABOVE) producers from North London, Kye “Foamo” Gibbon and Matt “Rack’N’Ruin” Robson-Scott (whom I BELIEVE remixed Paloma Faith‘s “Picking Up The Pieces” a couple of years back?).
Currently touring in America, playing CHOONS off their hit-heavy debut album, Sirens (Capitol Records | Priority Records), Gorgon City (I’m hoping, anyway) is in the unique position to BLOW UP the U.S. careers of a number of my favorite UK singer/songwriters, thanks to prominent features on tracks like “Ready For Your Love” (featuring “IT” producer/singer MNEK), “Here For You” (featuring Laura Welsh, another buzzy star who recently released her debut U.S. EP), and “Lover Like You” featuring the ALWAYS reliable princess of UK garage, Katy B. Sirens is like a WHO’S WHO of UK/International talent, featuring MANY artists I’ve been wishin’ & hopin’ would make it to America in some capacity; Erik Hassle, Maverick Sabre, Yasmin…and of course the aforementioned Laura Welsh, MNEK and Katy B.
Unlike other UK acts like Naughty Boy and Disclosure who hand-picked LESSER-KNOWN or underground artists (at the time, anyway), i.e. – Sam Smith, Emeli Sandé, AlunaGeorge) Gorgon City opted to place a few big names on tracks—Jennifer Hudson for instance, who sings LOUDLY and FLAWLESSLY on one of Sirens‘ many stand outs, “Go All Night” (the duo actually produced a song on her latest album, JHud). Although Hudson is MORE holds more clout here in the States, perhaps this Gorgon City feature will elevate her profile across the pond? Another big name on the record is arguably, Katy B is a relatively big name in the UK, at least in her genre. That’s not to say Gorgon City completely shafts the little guys/girls. Their latest UK single, “Unmissable” features a relative newcomer, British singer/songwriter, Zak Abel, as do a number of other tracks with other unknowns (at least over here). Electronic/DJ acts from abroad continue to prove, time and time again—their abilities as musical curators, essentially hand-picking the next generation of American pop talent. As an up & coming singer/songwriter, you’d have to be CRAZY to turn down a feature on one of these records!
To celebrate the release of SIRENS, I’m giving away 2 copies of the album. To enter, please fill out the form below between now and Wednesday, October 22nd. I will be choosing 2 winners on Thursday, October 23rd. Only entrants living in the U.S. or Canada are eligible. GOOD LUCK!
