Hot Video Alert: Erik Hassle – No Words

At this point, my love for soulful Swedish singer/songwriter Erik Hassle is well documented. I’ve had the pleasure now, of seeing this tall, lanky Swede with a mop of red curls sing live twice and I still need more, ESPECIALLY after seeing him sing his new disco-infused single, “No Words” to a packed house at Piano‘s on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. WOW. Check out the video below.

Hassle’s debut, 2010’s Pieces was a brilliant collection of sad synthpop jams, including “Don’t Bring Flowers” and the hit single “Hurtful,” but lately the sensitive Swede has been taking us in a different direction. Last March he released the Somebody’s Party EP, featuring smooth R&B jams like first single, “Talk About It” and “Pathetic” and including collabs with Vic Mensa and Tinashe. While I loved the EP, I still found myself longing for remixes…something that recalled the fun, up-tempo, sad dance music heard on his debut record. Lucky for all of us, “No Words” satiates that longing and then some.

The video for “No Words” was directed by Ellis Bahl, and echoes the sentiments of the song perfectly, in that it “polarizes the pangs of regret and hindsight with the notion of living in the moment,” eloquently expressed in the official press release. If you didn’t manage to catch Erik playing one of his few solo shows this Spring, or on the road with BROODS or Twin Shadow, be on the look out for more dates later on. He’s hard at work on his debut album for RCA so I’m sure he’ll be back.
