UK Rapper/Producer/Songwriter Example knows how to craft the perfect dance-floor BANGER and his latest single, “Whisky Story” is no exception. The single is the first release off Example (AKA Elliot Gleave)’s forthcoming, as-yet-untitled sixth studio album. The video was shot in a single take (with multiple attempts) on the London tube and features Gleave, along with a number of actors, lip-syncing along to the high-energy electro-rap club cut. Check it out below.
“Whisky Story” is available to download (iTunes) now but won’t impact UK radio until August 28th. He wrote the song following the birth of his son when he was really hankering for a night on the town, recalling his days being young and single. “I want to put the fun and humor back into my music and when another artist heard it they said, ‘I think this is the most Example-y example track yet,’“ an assertion I’m inclined to agree with. It reminds me of an edgier, almost rock & roll, harder-core version of one of my favorite Example tunes, 2010’s “Last Ones Standing,” though considerably more hard-hitting and less melodic (except in the new song’s Aviiciadjacent chorus). Speaking about the really cool, homemade-looking video, Gleave says:
“I’d had the concept for the video in my head for over a year. It’s me walking and talking from the tube to Trafalgar Square. One take. One continuous shot. With me filming everything myself on a GoPro on a selfie stick. It took 80 people and 24 takes to get it right. The most stressed i’ve ever been on a video shoot.”
While we don’t know MUCH about the new Example album, it has been confirmed that it will mark the return of Example “the rapper,” arguably the talent that earned him his millions of fans all over the world—not to mention two MASSIVELY successful Top 5 albums, seven Top 10 singles and two UK No. 1’s. “Having time down under I was away from UK radio and the club scene which got me thinking that I wanted it to sound like nothing else out there at the moment, whilst keeping the energy and festival feel of the some of the biggest tracks to date.“ Message received, goal achieved.
Look out for upcoming UK festival appearances, including V and SW4 not to mention some scheduled appearances in Ibiza and a residency at BCM in Mallorca. For more info, check out http://www.trythisforexample.com/. “Whisky Story“ is out now (Sony Music UK/RCA UK)
