One artist that I think we’ll be hearing from a lot in 2015 is Aussie-born/London-based singer songwriter George Maple and after YOU check out the just-released video for “Vacant Space“—I think you’ll agree. She’s somethin’ else. The video, a live recording of the EP’s title track, premiered yesterday on The Fader and it’s a stunner. There’s no elaborate storyline. No crazy makeup or costumes. Just George Maple singing on a stage, backed only by her drummer, keyboard player and one helluva light show. It’s the kind of no frills performance that I’d expect from her in a live gig (and hope to one day soon).
In an interview with The Fader, Maple makes the shocking confession that “Vacant Space” ALMOST didn’t make the EP at all. SAY WHAT!? According to Maple;
“The whole song came together so quickly but it was almost uncomfortable to re-visit after I had written it. I was being honest with myself about a situation for the first time and I don’t think wanted to admit it to myself. I think a lot of the time the truth can be a lot more painful to deal with.”
Thankfully she had a change of heart.
One of my biggest regrets about FIRST EVER CMJ experience this past year was missing a performance by Aussie electropop singer/songwriter George Maple. Thanks to technical difficulties on the upstairs stage, every performance was delayed by at least an hour, which meant that I—unfortunately had to miss George Maple singing downstairs.*Le sigh*
To be honest, at that moment I think I’d only listened to one song…”Talk Talk” and while I liked it and wanted to hear more, I wasn’t fully invested in in George Maple until after CMJ. But let me tell you…I’m FULLY INVESTED NOW and I won’t rest until I turn at least ONE MORE (hopefully DROVES more) into a George Maple fan.
“Vacant Space” is the title track off George Maple‘s BRILLIANT new EP, out now on Aussie dance label Future Classic (iTunes), co-produced by Flume and Russ Chimes. The EP also features contributions from New York rapper Kilo Kish, British producer Kwes and Slime. Check out the GORGEOUS video for “Vacant Space” below, and listen to George Maple on Spotify.
