You’d never guess after listening to RAYE sing that this smokey-voiced English singer/songwriter was just 17 year-old—but that’s a fact. Following the release of last year’s critically acclaimed Welcome To The Winter EP (listen) Raye dazzles yet again with “Alien,” another soulful stunner. While “Alien” does feature a short rap interlude from London-based rapper Avelino— it’s Raye‘s presence you feel emanating through every bar of the song. While the song gives strong RnB vibes, it’s really a mix of RnB, electronic—a smart choice given how on-trend this genre fusion is right now (SEE Alessia Cara & Jones). Check out the video for “Alien” below, featuring footage of the fresh-faced teen twirling and posing in the wilderness, intercut with intergalactic imagery, vintage clips and yes, even an alien. The whole video was filmed to look homemade—sort of in the style Lana Del Rey popularized with her “Video Games” visual.
At times Raye sounds like a jazz singer, thanks to that rich smoky character in her voice, but in other spots there’s an almost ethereal quality to her vocal, which really compliments “Alien“s more electronic elements. Hailing from South London, Raye grew up on classic soul/jazz (Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole) which still influence her sound to this day, AS do contemporary acts like Drake, The Weeknd and Lauryn Hill.
