Jessie Ware Shows Fans ‘Tough Love’; Makes Them Wait ‘Til August For New Single

    Jessie Ware - Tough Love

29-year-old English singer/songwriter Jessie Ware is another one of those artists I’ve become obsessed with during my blogging hiatus.  Earlier this month Jessie teased fans on social media with the name of her single, “Tough Love” and premiered a couple of days later on Zane Lowe‘s BBC Radio 1 show.  The song was written by Ware and BenZel, a songwriting & production duo made up of pop power players Benny Blanco (Jessie J, Katy Perry) and Two Inch Punch (Sam Smith, Mikky Ekko).  “Tough Love” will be released August 3rd in the UK. While the song has a slightly different vibe than anything heard on her 2012 debut, Devotion, it doesn’t sound uncharacteristic.  In a press release, Ware describes the sound as “me experimenting with my voice and having fun with it,” which is exactly what I’m hearing.  Ware’s light and feathery vocals float above the sparkling production, which at times sound a bit like Cyndi Lauper‘s 1984 hit single, “Time After Time.”  If anything, “Tough Love” sounds like the next evolution of Jessie Ware and I have to say…I think I like where things are going.

While the follow-up album doesn’t have a title or release date yet, it is presumed to be coming out her old label, PMR Records/Friends Keep Secrets/Interscope.  Rumored collaborators include Ed Sheeran, Kid Harpoon, Dave Okumu (of The Invisible), R&B singer Miguel and Nineteen85, to name a few.

While I’d heard the name Jessie Ware (possibly because of her Disclosure collaboration), I didn’t really get into Devotion until it was released here in America and she started touring.  I remember seeing her last Fall at Irving Plaza in Manhattan’s Gramercy neighborhood. I was sick as a dog and almost sold my single ticket, but I convinced myself to go and boy, am I glad I did. She put on a show, plus the fabulous Mikky Ekko opened! Unbelieveble.

Devotion was produced by Dave Okumu, Julio Bashmore and Kid Harpoon and features the singles, “Running,” (later remixed by Disclosure), “Wildest Moments,” “Night Light” and my ultimate favorite…”If You’re Never Gonna Move,” which was remixed by Two Inch Punch…1/2 of the production team behind her new single.  Check out the video below and look for “Tough LoveAugust 3rd:
