Allie X

Ones to Watch: Allie X

    Allie X

I first read about Canadian-born/Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Allie X in a little sidebar in an issue of Billboard Magazine. After Tweeting about how promising this up & coming artist sounded, the author Tweeted back with a link to a longer piece, which appeared on Billboard.com. Her debut track, “Catch” was praised by Katy Perry following the single’s release, calling it a “SRING JAM!” Her new song, “Bitch” is a bit darker than her debut but equally alluring. Allie X…I’m hooked on you girl. Check out the trippy “Bitch” video BELOW.

Not a lot is known about Allie X, evidenced by her Billboard interview, with the promising young synthpop artist being coy regarding her background, age even how she came to work with hitmaker, Cirkut (Henry Russell Walter), Dr. Luke‘s right-hand man and producer/co-writer for everyone from Britney Spears and B.o.B. to Kesha and Katy Perry (he’s the man behind Perry’s “Part Of Me” and “Roar” as well as Miley Cyrus‘ “Wrecking Ball“). For me, X’s mysterious persona is all part of the allure. That, and the quality of the music she’s putting out there. All three tracks released so far, “Catch” “Prime” and “Bitch” are brilliant electopop nuggets, each with it’s own distinct sound. On “Catch,” X’s voice sounds a bit like CHVRCHES frontwoman Lauren Mayberry while on “Prime,” her vocals recall Marina Diamandis (of Marina & The Diamonds) mixed with a little Florrie & perhaps a pinch of Polly Scattergood. Her latest song, “Bitch” at the start sounds a bit like Lana Del Rey before the song’s tempo speeds up and I start to get Katie White (from The Ting Tings).  In addition to the vocals, all three songs feature flawless, dance-radio-ready, electropop production that are practically begging for remixes from DJs and remixers all over the world.  Speaking of remixes, check out this Billboard (the Montreal-based record producer, Mathieu Jomphe, not the magazine) remix of “Catchhere.

Allie X seems determined to NOT break out into the mainstream and maintain total creative control, something I gathered from her Billboard interview, as well as from the seemingly homemade, home video quality seen in her visuals. I totally respect this quality in an artist and understand not being in any rush to sign with a major label, which would mean (depending on the label) giving up some of that creative control. Whatever Allie X winds up doing with her career, I’m looking forward to following her journey.
