[Review] Colbie Caillat featuring Common – Favorite Song

    Colbie Caillat Favorite Song

When I first heard that Colbie Caillat was pairing up with rapper/actor Common for her new single, “Favorite Song,” I was a little skeptical.  Sure, rappers have paired up with singer/songwriters in the past (Common paired up with Lily Allen on what would become one of my favorite songs!) but something in me just couldn’t see Colbie’s light & fluffy pop/rock style meshing with Common‘s hard-hitting hip-hop, and unfortunately a live performance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show didn’t make me a believer.

    Colbie Caillat All For You

Favorite Song” is scheduled for release on May 8th and serves as Caillat’s official third single off her third album, All Of You, released last summer.  The song was co-written by Caillat and Ryan Tedder with Tedder performing double duties as producer on the track.  This guitar-driven pop/rock has a seasonal summery island vibe that Caillat very well could have nailed as a solo song, however Common‘s addition just seems like an after thought.  I think this song could have worked as a duet, had Caillat joined forces with a fellow singer/songwriter, for example, upcoming tour mate Gavin DeGraw or perhaps Jason Mraz?  While I appreciate Caillat’s attempt at expanding her crossover appeal, I honestly feel this song would have served her better presented in a different way.

Caillat’s third album, All For You was released July 12th on Universal Republic Records, debuting at #6 on the Billboard 200 chart.  The album’s second single, “Brighter Than The Sun,” became a big hit in Hollywood and was featured in more than 21 films, TV shows and commercials, making it the most licensed new song this decade.  Pretty impressive!

The talented 26 year old California-native first burst onto the scene with her infectious debut single, “Bubbly,” which has gone on to become one of the best-selling digital tracks of all time. Billboard Magazine named Caillat the ‘Breakthrough Artist of the Year‘ following the release of her debut album, COCO, which spawned two top 20 hits including “Bubbly” (#5) and “Realize” which peaked at #20.  Her 2009 follow up album, Breakthrough, debuted at #1 on the chart, and featured the top 20 hit “Fallin’ For You.”  Caillat’s sophomore album earned her four Grammy nominations, of which she won two for her collaborations with Jason Mraz and Taylor Swift.

Colbie Caillat and Gavin DeGraw are set to embark on a co-headlining tour, which kicks off May 25th in Simpsonville, South Carolina.  Check out a list of tour dates and download Colbie’s third album, All For You (iTunes US/iTunes UK)!
