Sam Smith - I'm Not The Only One

Sam Smith Announces New Single

    Sam Smith

Soulful UK crooner Sam Smith announced his next UK single yesterday following a number of Twitter teases the week before. We knew Sam filmed the video for his new single while in LA a couple of weeks ago, however until yesterday, both he and his label remained mum as to what song the video was for. After a little bit of suspense, all became clear at 3:00 PM (BST) Smith Tweeted an image:

And just like that, all was right in the world. “I’m Not The Only One” has been announced as Smith’s latest single from the hit debut album, In The Lonely Hour. For the time being, the Jimmy Napes-produced ballad only has a UK release date, August 31st (via Capitol Records), but hopefully the single will get some love here in America as well. The song has already charted at No.69 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and that’s without any sort of radio push. While we wait for Luke Monaghan (“Leave Your Lover“)-directed video, let’s listen to the audio for the new single below.

Penned by Smith, “I’m Not The Only One” has always been one of my favorites on the album and while I’m still holding out hope for BONUS track (WTF?!) “Restart” getting a surprise single release, this is as good a choice as any from the album. The single serves as the follow-up to previous singles, including most recently “Stay With Me,” which became Smith’s second consecutive No. 1, after the Two Inch Punch-produced “Money On My Mind” hit the top spot earlier this year. In the U.S. “Stay With Me” didn’t fare too poorly either, earning Smith his first Top 5 single on the Billboard Hot 100, meanwhile his collaborations with Disclosure (“Latch“) and Naughty Boy (“La La La“) notched Smith spots in both the chart’s Top 10 and Top 20 respectively. Not too shabby for a guy who was scrubbing toilets in a pub only years prior.

    Sam Smith

Sam Smith has been dazzling audiences with his live vocals, crisscrossing all over the globe in recent months, playing to thousands in a series of U.S. and UK festivals, selling out a North American tour this fall, earning the respect of peers and contemporaries along the way…big names like Nile Rodgers, Maxwell and Mary J. Blige. Sam has also been announced as one of the performers at this year’s iTunes Festival, streamed live all over the world from The Roundhouse in London. Joining Sam at this years festival include massive talent like Blondie, Robert Plant, Maroon 5, Pharrell, Calvin Harris, Kylie Minogue, and new Music Is My King Size Bed favorite, Kiesza.

In addition to, what’s certain to be a heartbreaking video (how can it not be with this song!), “I’m Not The Only One” will be backed by remixes from two of the greats: American DJ Armand Van Helden (Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani) and the UK’s own Grant Nelson (sometimes known by his alter ego Bump & Flex) (Kelis, Aaliyah, Jamiroquai). As sad and depressing as this song about unrequited love and longing is, a couple of serious house remixes should turn the mood around right quick, no?

Check out the tracklisting for the single release and download it August 31st. Also check out a live version of hte song, part of an intimate set he played at the iHeartRadio Theater in New York City a couple of months back (which I had the ultimate pleasure of attending).

    Tracklisting:
    1. I’m Not the Only One (Radio Edit) 3:24
    2. I’m Not the Only One (Armand van Helden Remix) 6:35
    3. I’m Not the Only One (Grant Nelson Remix) 6:47
    4. I’m Not the Only One (Armand van Helden’s ‘DAT SHIZNIT IZ SLAMMIN’ Remix)
