I first remember hearing about 21 year-old singer/songwriter TINASHE back when she was a part of The Stunners, a girl group managed by former pop singer/current music executive Vitamin C. While, at the time I thought The Stunners showed a lot of promise, now I can’t quite picturing Tinashe as anything else EXCEPT for a solo star. While debut single, (the Schoolboy Q-assisted “2 On“) continues to ride the charts Tinashe is moving onto the next, releasing follow-up single, the Detail (Beyonce, Nicki Minaj)-produced “Pretend” featuring rapper A$AP Rocky. The two songs will feature on the R&B star’s forthcoming debut album, Aquarius, out October 7th on RCA Records.
If the first two singles are any indication, we can expect Aquarius (written and recorded in London, New York and LA) to be chock-full of slick, smooth contemporary R&B cuts with subtle 90s influences flowing throughout. Working with in demand producers like DJ Mustard (2 Chainz, Trey Songz), Redwine (Waka Flocka, Colette Carr), DJ Marley Waters (all three of whom produced “2 On“), Boi-1da, Jasper, Future, Stargate and a number of others including some special surprises. According to Tinashe;
“Aquarius is my official album introduction to the world and represents a new season of music and art. I cannot wait to finally share with the world what I have been working so hard on for the past few years. This is just the beginning.”

While I was eager to hear new Tinashe music, “2 On” still resonates, both with me personally and on the charts. It’s been out seemingly forever and I’ve yet to get sick of it (definitely a good sign)! The song topped Billboard‘s Rhythmic Airplay chart (where it remained for weeks!) and peaked in the Top 5 of Billboard‘s Hot R&B Songs Chart. The The Fader called “2 On” Tinashe‘s “star-making moment” and I’m inclined to agree. The New York Post also dubbed it one of 2014’s songs of the summer, another assessment I’m inclined to agree with (I added it to My Summer Songs playlist on Spotify!).
Prior to releasing “2 On” (check out the STUNNING video here), between 2012 and 2013 Tinashe was doing her own thing, releasing three critically-acclaimed mixtapes: In Case We Die (2012), Reverie (2012) and Black Water (2013). She may be only 21, but this accomplished singer/songwriter/producer/performer is already proving herself a force to be reckoned with. She’s a confident performer that “radiates a distinct and dynamic vision of R&B punctuated by hip-hop attitude and pop flavor with a DIY-or-die mindset” (thanks official Press Release!). Check out the stunning lyric video for “Pretend” below and look for her on the new Kid Ink single, “Body Language,” featuring Usher. Big things on the horizon for this talented lady.
