Tove Styrke is yet another talented Swedish singer/songwriter. The “Borderline” EP is set for release on November 23rd (Sony Sweden | RCA Records) in the UK and the USA. The stunning video for “Borderline” was released October 15th and filmed on the picturesque Arctic island of Svalvard. Following the single’s initial release in October, the song hit No. 1 on the Hype Machine ‘Popular Chart,’ where it stayed for 2 days, garnering nearly 100,000 plays. Written by Tove Styrke and Janne Kask, “Borderline” was produced by Johan T. Karlsson (Familjen). The single is the title track taken from Styrke’s new EP and follows previous single, “Even If I’m Loud It Doesn’t Mean I’m Talking To You,” which marked the artist’s first single in 3 years. Styrke was discovered on Swedish Idol at just 16 years-old, subsequently landing a record deal with Sony Sweden. Styrke released her self-titled debut in 2010 which would later become her first platinum-selling record at home in Sweden, earning her a Swedish Grammy nomination.
Sweden is a breeding ground for intelligent pop music and has been for a while now. The Scandinavian nation gave us ABBA (for better of worse) in the 1970s and Roxette in the 1980s. In the 90s, Sweden shared with us Ace of Base, The Cardigans, Rednex and pre-Konichwa Records Robyn. In the 2000s, Sweden churned out cheesy Europop acts like Alcazar, September, the A*Teens. Recently, the music coming out of Sweden seems to be more intelligent, both in terms of songwriting, production and overall artistry. While some covet the dancefloor (i.e. – Avicii, Swedish House Mafia) others straddle that dance-pop line (i.e. – Loreen, Agnes, Icona Pop). Still others—Lykke Li, Niki & The Dove, and Tove Lo, create music that, in it’s original form, combines lush, intricate melodies with slick, sexy synthesizers at the same time lending itself PERFECTLY to DJs and remixers. File Tove Styrke into this category of artists.
With MASSIVE support coming in from mainstream media, music tastemakers and buzz-generating blogs like Popjustice, The Guardian, Stereogum, The Line of Best Fit and more—it’s only a matter of time before Tove Styrke blows up worldwide.
