As if I couldn’t love “Number One,” Tove Styrke‘s infectious little BOP of a new single any more, she goes and releases the video. *SWOON* The video starts out with the 22 year-old, sitting backstage, putting on her high tops and singing an acapella version of the song. As she heads out, the sound of music lures her into an empty auditorium where she sees a lonely little rain cloud, just floating there above the stage dumping buckets of water—OBVIOUSLY it was just begging to be danced under.
Grabbing her umbrella, Tove marches over to the rain cloud and begins an energetic, slightly spastic dance routine. While the video starts out, seemingly paying homage to Rihanna‘s “Umbrella” visual; eventually she ditches the prop and opts to get wet and wild instead. As nonsensical as this video’s theme is, Styrke’s bubbly personality and quirky energy more than make up for a lack of any story. Girl dances on empty stage underneath rain cloud. With a song as catchy as “Number One,” that’s really all you need.
“Number One” features on Tove Styrke‘s new album, KIDDO which dropped June 9th (RCA Records/Sony Sweden). The album includes previous singles, “Borderline” (which went all the way to the No. 1 spot on Hype Machine‘s ‘Popular Chart’) and “Ego” (recently selected by Entertainment Weekly for their ‘Must List‘). In addition to being one of my favorite songs at the moment (check it out on my Summer Spotify playlist), top tastemaker blog Pigeons and Planes named it one of the best songs of the month.
